Job Purpose

The Professional Nurses will be responsible for delivering basic functional primary healthcare services, as defined through detailed consultation with national experts and provincial staff, to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Application Requirements

  • A four-year bachelor’s degree or diploma in Nursing Science or an equivalent qualification
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse
  • Experience working at primary healthcare facilities
  • No criminal record or dismissal for misconduct at any previous workplace
  • Must undergo a criminal record check, including fingerprinting by the Tshwane Metro Police Department at the applicant’s own cost

Primary Functions

  • Conducting patient evaluations and revising care plans as needed
  • Recording patient information manually or via computerized systems
  • Performing comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessments, assisted by diagnostic data and medical evaluations
  • Interpreting assessment findings to plan and provide appropriate care for optimal patient wellness
  • Requesting and interpreting diagnostic laboratory tests and implementing interventions based on results
  • Providing patient counseling (e.g., HIV, termination of pregnancy, adolescence) for psychological support and decision-making
  • Prescribing and issuing medication within statutory protocols and procedures
  • Managing medical emergencies (e.g., cardiac, respiratory, or fracture cases) with appropriate case management
  • Tracing patients and their contacts
  • Identifying and reporting notifiable communicable diseases as per the National Health Act, 2003 (Act 61 of 2003)
  • Implementing communicable disease prevention and control through surveillance, case follow-up, and outbreak prevention
  • Preventing medico-legal hazards through high-quality nursing practices and quality assurance measures
  • Referring patients to appropriate health professionals, agencies, or higher levels of care
  • Acting as a mediator and patient advocate in consultations
  • Adhering to ethical codes, professional conduct, and legal requirements
  • Performing medical and diagnostic procedures (e.g., HIV testing)
  • Implementing infection control and general health and safety measures
  • Executing health programs and projects (e.g., HIV/AIDS and immunization campaigns)
  • Documenting care and data concisely in compliance with legal and approved documentation systems
  • Fostering good public relations and advocating for patients
  • Maintaining courteous relationships with customers and resolving complaints effectively
  • Ensuring patient confidentiality in accordance with statutory requirements
  • Engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration to optimize patient care
  • Acting as a liaison with medical staff to coordinate patient care
  • Collaborating with the primary healthcare team to enhance service delivery
  • Serving as a patient care facilitator
