Matric Pass Requirements: Different pass levels
In this section, we will discuss the different pass levels that students can achieve. There are four levels of achievement according to the Department of Education.
- Bachelors Pass
- Diploma
- Higher Certificate
- National Senior Certificate Pass
It’s important to note that learners need to pass their home language. They will be failed if they obtain anything less than 40% for home language.
Bachelor’s Degree Pass Requirements
Students who pass with a Bachelors Pass gain provisional entrance into any University or degree course. However, they are required to obtain the following marks.
- At least 40% for their home Language
- 50% for four other high credit subjects (excluding Life Orientation)
- At least 30% for two other subjects
- Must pass 6 out of 7 subjects
Diploma Pass Requirements
Students who pass with a Diploma will gain provisional entrance into any University of Technology. Furthermore, they will need to obtain the following marks.
- Must obtain at least 40% for Home Language
- At least 40% for four other High Credit subjects (excluding Life Orientation)
- Must obtain at least 30% for two other subjects
- Should pass 6 out of 7 subjects
Higher Certificate Pass Requirements
If a student passes with a higher certificate they can apply to any College or certificate course. In addition, they will be required to obtain the following marks.
- 40% in their Home Language
- At least 40% in two other subjects
- Must obtain at least 30% for three other subjects
- Should pass 6 out of 7 subjects
To qualify for a Higher Certificate students are required to have English or Afrikaans as their home language.
NSC (National Senior Certificate) Pass
Students who pass with an NSC will not be able to study at a university. Therefore, it’s vital that students work hard and avoid passing with only an NCS.
Here are the marks that students need to obtain to get an NSC pass.
- A minimum of 40% for home language
- At least 40% for two other subjects
Furthermore, students can fail a subject (home language included). However, they will need to attain at least 30% for six other subjects. To clarify, students are required to have an average of 33.5% to qualify for an NSC pass.

Provisional Entrance information
It should be noted that provisional entrance does not guarantee students a space. For instance, students who passed with a bachelor’s pass might not get accepted for medicine.
