About SAIMI

As a result of a joint effort between South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and Nelson Mandela University (NMU), the South Africa International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) was established in 2014, partnering with stakeholders from training institutions, sector education and universities, educational authorities, government, maritime industry and the maritime sector representatives of Africa.

SAIMI advocates and promotes the maritime industry in South Africa, also it coordinates training, skills, education, research and development, and serves as a knowledge base on maritime matters.

Sindiswa Carol ‘Tu’ Nhlumayo Merit Bursary was created to provide opportunities for women from disadvantaged backgrounds to study and pursue careers in the maritime fields. The bursary was created to recognize the efforts of Sindiswa Nhlumayo, the former Executive Director of SAMSA’s Maritime Excellence Centre.
