About SAPREF
SAPREF is a joint venture between Shell SA Refining and BP Southern Africa and is Southern Africa’s largest crude oil refinery which has been in operation for 52 years. The company produces a variety of petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, paraffin, aviation fuel, liquid petroleum gas, base and lubricating oil, bitumen, solvents, marine fuel oil and chemical feed stocks.
SAPREF’s facilities include the refinery in the South Durban Basin, storage facilities at the harbour, a Single Buoy Mooring (SBM) where 80% of oil is discharged by tankers and joint bunkering services operated on behalf of several petroleum companies.
SAPREF is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified as well as Level 2 BBBEE contributor in terms of the Department of Trade and Industry’s Codes of Good Practice. It has a design capacity to process between 180 000 – 190 000 barrels per day depending on the type of crude oil processed.

SAPREF bursaries are awarded annually to students continuing a professional career in
The bursary covers tuition, residence fees and books allowances. The successful grantees have a chance of practical work experience at the company during school vacation. Upon graduation, grantees may also be required to work for SAPREF for a certain duration.
Selection is based primarily on academic performance, however, individuals who demonstrate potential to excel in other areas may also be considered.
SAPREF Bursary Requirements and Eligibility
- Grade 12 South African students at accredited institutions
- Good academic performance
- Students of chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering
Holders of other , scholarships or grants are not eligible to apply except where these are received as merit awards.
