About SAAFoST

SAAFoST, or the South African Association for Food Science and Technology, is a national organization that works towards the development of food science in the country. It encourages and facilitates scientific research in food science. The knowledge is then shared across the country’s food industry via publications, email newsletters, and magazines.

Founded in 1960 in Cape Town, there are currently 2,000 active members. It is a non-profit and is run by volunteers.

SAAFoST also promotes professionalism in food science. It offers grants and conducts seminars, exhibitions, workshops, and meetings to groom students of today. The SAAFoST Foundation conducts these activities.

SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary 2022

The SAAFoST Foundation offers bursaries to a certain number of students each year. Students who are pursuing their studies within Food Science and Technology will be awarded the SAAFoST Undergrad Bursary.

For the academic year 2022, there are three bursaries on offer, which are:

This bursary is awarded to students currently in Matric who want to pursue an undergrad degree or diploma next year. Only those interested in the field of food science and technology are eligible to apply. Find more information about this bursary here.

  • SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary

The SAAFoST Undergraduate bursary is intended for students who are currently pursuing their undergraduate studies in the field of food science and technology. They will receive a maximum of R 35,000 per year towards their tuition fees. The payments are made directly to the tertiary institution in two installments.

The part-time bursary is exclusively for the SAAFoST members. The recipients should be pursuing a part-time BSc or BTech degree in food sciences and technology. But membership with SAAFoST is a must. Find more information about this bursary here.

The bursaries are offered after evaluating applicants based on three factors: academic merit, potential in the field of food technology, and employment equity.

The bursary amount will only cover the tuition fees. Students are expected to pay for other expenses.

Eligibility Criteria for SAAFoST Undergrad Bursary

All applicants looking forward to this undergrad bursary must satisfy the eligibility criteria laid out by the foundation. Since the foundation receives numerous applications for the bursary, it rejects those that do not fulfill all of them.

The eligibility requirements are:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must be a resident of the country for a minimum of three years
  • Must have completed Matriculation
  • Must be studying full-time at a recognized tertiary institution
  • Must be either pursuing a Bachelors degree or Diploma in food science and technology
  • Must be entering their second, third, or fourth year in the year 2022
  • Must have taken SAAFoST membership for 12 months before applying

However, fulfilling all the above criteria doesn’t guarantee the bursary. Preference is given to those with a solid academic track record or who have potential in the field. The decision made by the selection committee is deemed final.

How to Apply?

Eligible candidates for the undergraduate bursary should move forward with the application process. The process is simple and quick but does require attention to detail. Incorrect applications that do not follow the guidelines are rejected. Here are the steps to follow:

You need to send the scanned documents and application form to this email address: irene@saafost.org.za.

For the subject line, use “SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary Application“.

Documents Required

Here is the list of documents necessary:

  • ID documents or RSA Passport
  • Password size photo
  • Academic records (including the latest results)
  • Personal statement in an A4 page detailing how your education in food science and technology will benefit the scientific community
  • Reference letter from someone who knows about your learning capabilities for at least a year
  • Proof of registration at the institution you’re studying at

Closing Date

The last date to apply for the bursary is 31 January Annually. Applications send past this date will not be considered.
