About the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF)
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is an organization that initiates the advancement of the South African film industry. It is an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture that provides funding for the development and distribution of films as well as the training of potential filmmakers.
South Africa has a growing film industry offering a diverse range of productions as the country shares its stories with audiences both locally and abroad. However, there is a need to ensure equitable growth and transformation in the industry.
The NFVF is an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture to ensure the equitable and sustainable growth of the country’s film industry. It aims to stimulate the South African film industry and capacitate previously disadvantaged individuals interested in a career in filmmaking. There are vast training needs as the industry is experiencing some skills shortages, which the NFVF plans to eliminate. The foundation offers bursaries for local and international studies related to the film industry.
NFVF Bursaries
The National Film and Video Foundation offers a bursary to disadvantaged students to pursue their studies within the Television and Film industry.
However, the bursaries offered don’t include the acting and performance arts courses. Qualified students who don’t have the funding to pursue their dreams can avail of the two types of bursaries:
National Bursary
The bursary is awarded for an undergraduate and postgraduate diploma or degree studies in Film or television-related subject areas (excluding any courses involving performance arts or acting).
The objective of the NFVF bursary programme is to assist and inspire young movie and TV industry prospects by giving them financial support. disbursements are made based on two distinct criteria, financial need and merit.

National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) Bursary Requirements and Eligibility
Applicants must satisfy the minimum requirements before applying. If an interested applicant fails to satisfy all of these requirements, this will lead to their application getting disregarded. The requirements are as follows:
National Bursary Requirements
- Must be a citizen of South Africa.
- Must have completed Matric.
- Must have an average of at least 50% in their studies in 2019.
- Must have registered or is provisionally registered to study full-time towards a TV or Film qualification. This means a postgraduate or undergraduate degree or diploma, not in any acting or performance arts courses.
- Must have registered or is provisionally registered to study at one of the accredited tertiary institutions in South Africa – preferably to the accredited public tertiary institutions.
- Must have a proven financial need – meaning they must have a total annual gross income R600 000 and below.
- Must have a strong academic record.
- Preference goes to students who are previously disadvantaged.
International Bursary Requirements
- Must be a citizen or permanent resident of South Africa.
- Must have the intention of studying at an international tertiary institution for a postgraduate TV or Film qualification, not an acting or performance arts course.
- Must plan to study a course that isn’t available in South Africa
- Must apply at least 6 months before the course starts.
- Must provide proof of strong academic merit within their field of competency
- Must have a strong academic record.
How to Apply and Application Details
Interested applicants must accomplish an online application form at https://nfvf.praxisgms.co.za.
Applicants must first register an account before they can login and proceed with the application. They should also submit clear copies of the following supporting documents together with the online application.
National Bursary
- A certified copy of an ID document.
- A certified copy of the Matric certificate or the applicant’s most recent academic results.
- Proof of tertiary acceptance or the acknowledgment of their application printed on tertiary letterhead.
- The breakdown of annual academic fees printed on the tertiary letterhead.
- A motivational letter that states why the applicant should receive the bursary – 1 page only.
- For those below 21 years old, proof of income of the parents or guardians or spouse in the form of their most recent payslips or bank statements.
- For those above 21 years old, proof of financial support in the form of their most recent payslips, bank statements, social grant or if unemployed, an affidavit.
- If the applicant receives any other funding from public or private bursaries, a statement that indicates the funding amount, and the details of the bursary.
- Curriculum Vitae
International Bursary
- A certified copy of an ID document.
- A certified copy of the Matric certificate or the applicant’s most recent academic results.
- Curriculum Vitae
- A cover letter that includes the applicant’s personal motivation for study, the relevance of their studies to their future career path, and how their acquired skills will benefit the country.
- The breakdown of annual academic fees printed on the tertiary letterhead.
- If the applicant receives any other funding from public or private bursaries, a statement that indicates the funding amount, and the details of the bursary.
If the interested applicant doesn’t submit all of these documents completely, their application will get disregarded.
