About CHIETA
The Chemical Industries Education & Training Authority or CHIETA is a legal organization established by the Skills Development Act (1998) with a vision of world-class education and training for the chemical industry. This is done through the CHIETA’s responsibility of facilitating the skills development in the chemical sector.
CHIETA Bursaries
CHIETA founded a bursary programme in order to financially support qualified young South Africans to continue their full time higher education. The bursary will be granted to full-time studies at any accredited South African public tertiary institution within the sub-sectors such as Petroleum, Explosives, Fast Moving Consumer Goods, Base Chemicals, Fertilisers, Speciality, Chemicals, Glass, Pharmaceuticals, Surface Coatings.
The following fields of study will be prioritized for the bursary programme:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical and Industrial)
- Biochemistry
- Polymer Technology
- Environmental Science
- Pharmacy
- Biomedical Technology
- Operations Management
- Bachelor of Science
The bursary pays for the tuition fees as defined through the institution’s statement of account which is capped at the amount of R76 000.00 maximum. Any remaining amount may cover books and other academic expenses according to the proof of expenditure.
CHIETA Bursary Requirements and Eligibility
- South African citizen
- Between the ages of 16 to 35 who are not receiving any other bursary funding
- Recently completed Grade 12/Matric with Mathematics and Physical Science
- Currently studying or already registered in one of the disciplines mentioned above with an accredited South African tertiary institution and have passed all their previous semester’s modules
How to Apply and Application Details

- Attach certified copies of the following documents with your application form:
- ID not older than 3 months
- Final Grade 12 results or recent statement of academic results
- Proof of registration from a tertiary institution (to be submitted before contract signing if awarded the bursary)
- Household proof of income:
- Payslip not older than 3 months, if parents/guardians are employed
- Pension slip not older than 3 months, if parents/guardians are pensioners
- Sworn statement not older then 3 months, if parents/guardians are unemployed
- Parents/Guardians ID
- Proof of registration for other siblings who are registered at tertiary institutions, if applicable
