About Palabora Mining

Palabora Mining Company Limited is a publicly-traded mining company that controls open-pit and underground mines. It was founded in 1956. The mines of PMC produce copper and byproducts such as precious metals from sulfuric acid, nickel sulphate, anode slimes, vermiculite, and magnetite. In fact, at nearly 2 000 metres in width, their open cast mine is Africa’s widest man-made hole.

Palabora has subsidiaries in Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States to market vermiculite in addition to its mining efforts.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed company’s headquarters are located in Phalaborwa, Limpopo, South Africa, and is the country’s sole producer of refined copper. The Rio Tinto Group (international mining conglomerates) owns 57 per cent of the company’s stock, while Anglo American PLC owns 17% and the rest 26% is a public float.
