The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is inviting applications for 200 Trainee Provincial Inspector positions. This is a great opportunity for unemployed youth to train as Traffic Officers and build a permanent career in law enforcement.

  • Salary: R193 359 per annum (Level 04) during training
  • Centre: Traffic Training College, Pietermaritzburg (placement at RTI stations across KwaZulu-Natal after training)

✅ Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet the following:

  • A Senior Certificate / Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
  • A valid Code B (manual) driver’s licence
  • No criminal record (SAPS clearance required)
  • Medical certificate (not older than 3 months) confirming fitness for strenuous exercise
  • Physically fit to perform strenuous exercise (further State medical tests required)
  • Age: Not older than 35 years on the first day of enrolment
  • South African Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Fit and proper person with good character

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Good verbal and written communication
  • Strong driving ability
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation

🚨 Duties

As a Provincial Inspector, your responsibilities will include:

  • Enforcing Road Traffic, Public Passenger, and Transport legislation
  • Managing traffic flow through point duty and traffic control
  • Assisting at accident scenes and advising on hazardous locations
  • Conducting traffic policing operations (roadblocks, speed testing, patrols)
  • Issuing notices, executing arrests, and testifying in court
  • Escorting abnormal loads and managing overload control
  • Conducting learner and driver licence testing
  • Roadworthiness testing of vehicles
  • Providing visible traffic control and crime prevention patrols
  • Participating in law enforcement projects and special operations
  • Maintaining effective administrative procedures
  • Complying with the Firearm and Ammunition Act 60/2000

📅 Training and Appointment

  • Successful candidates will be appointed as Trainee Provincial Inspectors on a fixed 2-year contract.
  • During this period, they must successfully complete the Traffic Officer’s Diploma Course.
  • After successful completion, candidates will be employed permanently as Provincial Inspectors (Level 6) with 12 months’ probation.
  • Trainees who fail to complete the diploma will have their employment terminated.

Additional requirements:

  • Work shifts (including weekends and public holidays)

  • Firearm competency training (Firearm Control Act compliance)
  • Alcohol screening at all stages of selection
