About Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa
The Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA) was formed in 1946, however, shaped its history way back 1885, when a group of 7 pharmacists established the South African Pharmaceutical Association. The Society aims to promote the professional, educational and economic interests of its members as well as of the pharmaceutical profession, encourage professional integrity and improve standards of professional conduct, promote and maintain the representation of the pharmacy sector, support and manage the health of the South Africans through quality and efficient pharmaceutical services and improve representations of all communities through diversity.
Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa Bursaries
The Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (FPE) of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa provides the availability of bursaries for undergraduate as well as the postgraduate study of pharmacy at from the second year students onwards.
The Undergraduate Bursary is awarded to BPharm pharmacy students in their 2nd or subsequent year of study. The bursary is awarded for 1 academic year at a time- a new application must be submitted each year for a bursary renewal. Bursaries will be awarded based on the following:
- Students financial circumstances
- Academic achievements and
- Other financial assistance received
A Postgraduate Bursary is awarded to Masters and Doctoral students pursuing their studies within pharmacy-related subjects. The bursary is awarded for 1 academic year at a time – a new application must be submitted each year for a bursary renewal. Candidates are selected based on project viability and academic potential which counts for 60% and financial need which counts for 40%.
Requirements and Eligibility For The PSSA Bursary
All the interested candidates must pass the eligibility criteria for the bursary. All the mentioned criteria must be fulfilled without any exceptions to avoid rejection of the application.
Undergraduate Bursary:
- Only South African citizens who are PSSA student members (membership is free, email nitsa@pssa.org.za for more info)
- Proven financial need with a maximum household income of R130 000 annually before tax
- All subjects must be passed, minimum 60% average overall
- Must be studying full-time towards a BPharm qualification
- Pharmacy students (BPharm) already studying, i.e. entering 2nd, 3rd or 4th year
- Studying at a
Postgraduate Bursary:
- Only South African citizens who are PSSA student members (membership is free, email nitsa@pssa.org.za for more info)
- Full-time postgraduate pharmacy students registered with a School, Faculty, or Department of Pharmacy
- Must have completed an undergraduate qualification
- Studying full-time towards a postgraduate (Masters or Doctoral) Pharmacy qualification
- Studying at a
- You must be a PSSA student member (email nitsa@pssa.org.za for more information)
- Paid-up member of the Association who has renewed membership at least once
- Project Viability and Academic potential
How to Apply and Application Details
- For FPE Undergraduate Bursary:
FPE Undergraduate Bursary is currently closed. The application form for the 2023 undergraduate bursary will be available from June 2022.
Attached the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form:
- Certified copy of your ID document
- Certified copy of your matric certificate
- Certified copy of your full tertiary academic record/ transcript
- Letter of motivation by one of your pharmacy lecturers
- Financial Declaration (details are on the application form)
- Proof of family income
- Proof of any other dependents of the supporter
- Proof of any other financial assistance (loans/ bursaries etc)

Additional application procedure for postgraduate applicants:
- Postgraduate candidates must read the Guidelines for award of the SAAHIP post-graduate bursary (.pdf) before applying.
- Submission of applications to the SAAHIP National Executive for eligibility assessment.
- Recommendation of the successful applicant by the SAAHIP National Executive to the FPE.
- Approval of transfer of funds from the SAAHIP to the FPE.
- Award and administration of the bursary by the FPE
