About the IMESA
IMESA stands for the Institute Of Municipal Engineering Of Southern Africa (IMESA) and was established in 1961. It encourages and defends the rights of more than a thousand individual members, including firms engaged in municipal engineering and the built environment sector and municipal engineers.
The aim of the companies is to encourage skills within the field of engineering and provide benefits to the community.
To help students who otherwise couldn’t afford their education in the field of civil engineering, as well as to recognise the accomplishments of IMESA members’ dependents, the IMESA Bursary Scheme was established in 2000.
Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa (IMESA) Bursary 2023
IMESA is offering students an opportunity to apply for funding through bursaries for the upcoming academic year 2023. There will be two types of bursaries:
- For non-IMESA members (Bursary Scheme A): for pursuing studies in the field of Civil Engineering or any related discipline.
- For dependents of IMESA members (Bursary Scheme B): for students related to IMESA members, for pursuing studies in the field of Civil Engineering.
Bursary Coverage
- Cost of tuition of up to R50 000.
- If the cost of tuition is less than R50 000, the remainder of the money can be used for prescribed books.

- The funds will be paid directly to the institution where the student is pursuing their studies under 30 days after the student submits their account statement to IMESA. The student must provide the head office with their proof of enrollment and medical certificate before the first installment of the bursary is issued.
The selected candidates will be informed by the end of the year 2022 and there will be an evaluation before the awarding of the bursaries.
Eligibility Criteria For The Bursary
The candidates must check the eligibility criteria before applying for the bursary. There should not be any exception or the application will not be considered.
For non-IMESA members:
- The candidate must hold South African citizenship.
- The candidate must have completed Matric.
- The candidate must be pursuing a full-time degree in Civil Engineering or an infrastructure-related field.
- The candidate must be studying at a university accredited by ECSA within South Africa.
- The candidate must have completed the 1st year of their course.
- The candidate must be starting their second year (or later) of degree in 2023.
- The candidate must be economically deficient.
For the dependents of IMESA members:
- The candidate must hold South African citizenship.
- The candidate must have completed Matric.
- The candidate must be pursuing a full-time degree in Civil Engineering or an infrastructure-related field.
- The candidate must be studying at a university accredited by ECSA within South Africa.
- The candidate must have completed the 1st year of their course.
- The candidate must be starting their second year (or later) of degree in 2023.
- The candidate must either be a child or a dependent member of an IMESA member.

After completing the application must be submitted via email at bursaries@imesa.org.za
The subject line of the email list contains “IMESA Bursary Application” along with the mention of Scheme A or B.
Documents Required
All the mentioned documents must be submitted along with the application form. If any document of missing or false, the application will be rejected.
- Certified copies of ID documents.
- Results of mid-year exams of the year 2022.
- Proof of income of parents or guardians and affidavit as proof of the financial condition of the student.
Closing Date Of The Bursary
The application will be closed on 15 September 2022. All the applications must be submitted before the deadline. No late applications will be accepted.
