About Zululand Anthracite Colliery
Zululand Anthracite Colliery, or ZAC, is an underground anthracite mine in South Africa that is the sole producer of anthracite in the country. The site was discovered in 1981 by Transnatal Coal and Utah Mining JV. In 1985, BHP Billiton developed the mining resources at ZAC, which were later acquired by Riversdale Mining Limited. Today, the mining site is operated by Menar, a private investment company. The company operates three shafts at ZAC. A fourth is scheduled to open in 2022, which would increase the output.
