About Stellenbosch University Department of Genetics
The Department of Genetics was established in 1898 when the Stellenbosch College of Agriculture was founded on the outskirts of the village of Stellenbosch. This organization consists of an interdisciplinary group of researchers and postgraduate students who focus on research opportunities in a plant, animal, and human genetics.
The Department of Genetics’ primary objective is to cultivate an environment wherein Genetics as core science can serve as a basis for the creative development of human resources to be an advantage to an individual, the greater society, and the environment as a whole. In order to achieve this, the Stellenbosch Department of Genetics is committed to providing quality research, creative teaching, and excellent and responsible service delivery to both the community and environment.
MSc Bursary: Stellenbosch University Department of Genetics
The Stellenbosch University Department of Genetics is looking for an intelligent student who is willing to take up the challenge of investigating olive lace bugs and olive flea beetles in order to determine how they affect olive trees in South Africa. The perfect candidate will be awarded a bursary that will allow him/her to pursue an education in Genetics or any other related fields of study.
The goal of the project is to produce new information regarding the diversity of olive lace bugs and olive flea beetles, their natural enemies and distribution in the Western Cape of South Africa, using DNA-based and morphological methods.
Bursary Requirements and Eligibility
In order to be considered for this bursary, the applicant must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria:
- South African citizen
- Display competitive academic record
- Studying within one of the aforementioned fields of study
- Possess a valid driver’s license
How to Apply and Application Details
A complete application must consist of:
- A motivational letter stating why you are deserving to be awarded a bursary (must be no longer than two pages)
- Academic transcripts
- Curriculum Vitae (must be no longer than two pages)
- At least two recommendation letters from academics who have taught and/or supervised the applicant within the past two years
