South African Reserve Bank Bursaries
The SARB bursary is an annual bursary awarded to a certain number of students each year. For the year 2022, it will be awarded to students who are entering their first year at a tertiary institution. The students must be in one of the following fields of study:
- Law
- Finance
- Economics
- Accounting
- Mathematical Statistics
- Information Technology
- Actuarial Science
The bursary amount will depend on the particular needs of a candidate as determined by SARB. Apart from the regular application process, students will have to undergo testing and attend an interview. The results of these contribute to the final selection.
If awarded, students will receive funding for the first year. It is then renewed for the next year, depending on the academic performance. Students, however, aren’t required to reapply.
As part of the bursary benefits, bursars will get a paid vacation work opportunity with the South African Reserve Bank. Other than that, they’d have to agree to serve at the SARB for a duration equal to the bursary funding duration.
About South African Reserve Bank (SARB)
The South African Reserve Bank, abbreviated as SARB, is the central bank of South Africa. It is responsible for maintaining price stability in the country and ensure economic growth across all sectors. The central bank was established in 1921 following the passing of “Currency and Bank Act of 10 August 1920.”
The bank employs thousands of people in the country at various locations. It also serves the community by offering financial assistance to students in need via bursaries.
SARB Bursary Requirements and Eligibility
To be eligible for the SARB bursary, applicants must fulfill the eligibility criteria. These are the first step to the selection process. Since the bank receives hundreds of applicants and the bursaries are limited, it rejects those that do not fulfill all the criteria. So you must cross-check with the criteria before applying for it.
The eligibility requirements for SARB bursary 2023 are:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must have valid South African ID documents
- Must not be over the age of 30
- Must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric
- Must be willing to pursue a degree in one of the aforementioned fields of study
- Must have been accepted into a recognized South African university
- Must be entering their first year of study in the year 2022
- For the current year of study, applicants must have achieved no less than 70% as the minimum overall average
- Must have financial constraints in attending the university
Fulfilling all the criteria does not guarantee funding. Preference will be given to those coming from a disadvantaged background. The list published SARB will be considered final.
