Sanlam Bursaries
Sanlam is calling on suitable candidates who are looking for bursary support to submit an application for its current Bursary Programme offering. The bursary programme is for high potential students who wish to advance their actuarial studies but are hindered mainly by financial constraints.
Students are invited to apply for Sanlam’s bursary programme for the academic year 2023. Bursaries are available to current students and matriculants studying towards an Actuarial Science qualification.
In conjunction with the bursary, the following expenses will be covered: the actuarial board exam, tuition fees, accommodation, book expenses, travel expenses, and personal expenses.
The following benefits will also be provided to recipients of bursaries:
- Continually supporting and paying for actuarial board exams
- Work opportunities during vacations and opportunities to network with Sanlam employees
- A mentorship program and academic support provided by actuarial professionals at Sanlam
- Assurance of employment after graduation
- There are a number of rotational opportunities across a variety of disciplines

Eligibility Criteria For The Bursary
Prior to applying, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements (please note that your application will not be considered if you do not meet all of the requirements):
- Applicants must be South African citizens or non-South African citizens
- As of 2023, you must either be in Matric and intend to study full-time towards an Actuarial Science qualification OR you must already be studying full-time towards an Actuarial Science qualification (in your first, second or third year).
- Undergraduate students: you need to demonstrate a commitment to academic success
- You must have a minimum score of 90% for Mathematics and an overall grade of A (your final Matric results may be considered) for current Matric students.
- Current Matric students: You must possess excellent math skills, be able to solve complex problems and remain focused and disciplined throughout your studies and training.
- Preference will be given to South Africans from the designated groups (Africans, Coloureds, and Indians) as well as non-South Africans based on merit.

With your online application, include clear copies of the following supporting documents. You must provide these documents as part of your application – any missing items can lead to disqualification:
Undergraduate students currently enrolled:
- Transcripts of all academic work (on institution letterhead)
- Registration and/or fee statements (on the institution’s letterhead)
- Matriculation certificate (copy only)
- Documents of identification, passports, or valid student visas (only copies)
- Curriculum Vitae highlighting academics, extracurricular activities, and leadership skills
- Write a motivational letter to support your application (which answers the following five questions: what an actuary does, why you are interested in studying actuarial science, what you hope to achieve as an actuary, and what your alternative career path will be if you do not become an actuary)
Currently enrolled Matric students:
- Grade 11 final results for 2021 (copy only)
- Results of the 2022 Matric mid-year (copy only)
- Results of the NBT (copy only)
- Curriculum Vitae highlighting academics, extracurricular activities, and leadership skills
- Write a motivational letter to support your application (which answers the following five questions: what an actuary does, why you are interested in studying actuarial science, what you hope to achieve as an actuary, and what your alternative career path will be if you do not become an actuary)
Closing Date
The last date of submission of the application is 31 July Annually. Applications received after this date will not be considered; you must apply by the closing date in order to be considered.
