About SACTA

SACTA stands for South African Cultivar and Technology Agency and is a central institution. The agency is responsible for administering breeding levies for a variety of oilseed crops and all self-pollinated grain. The crops include wheat, soybeans, barley, and canola.

The agency also works on the latest seed technology to help the farmers grow better crops. With better output, South Africa will no longer face food shortages and be self-reliant. The quality, along with the quantity, will also improve.

L&L Agricultural Services operate SACTA and takes major administrative decisions.

SACTA NPC Bursary 2022

The agency offers financial assistance to a certain number of students every year in the form of bursaries. Known as the SACTA NPC bursary, it aims to fund student’s education and help meet the labor demand.

For the academic year 2022, the bursaries will be awarded to postgraduate students. The fields of study should be in the grain and oilseed industry and include the following:

  • Agricultural Economics
  • Agricultural Meteorology
  • Agricultural Writers
  • Agricultural Engineering
  • Agronomy
  • Biometry
  • Conservation Agriculture
  • Food Science
  • Livestock Science
  • Plant Breeding
  • Plant Virology
  • Plant Biochemistry
  • Plant Pathology
  • Plant Physiology
  • Plant Entomology
  • Soil Microbiology
  • Soil Science
  • Weed Science
  • Data Science
  • Demand Planning

Other fields of study will also be considered, provided they’re related to the grain and oilseed industry.

The bursary amount depends on the level of study. Students pursuing a Masters degree can expect funding of R95,000 per annum for two years. Students pursuing a PhD or Doctoral degree will receive funding of R125,000 per annum for three years.

The Trust will disburse the first installment in January of 2022. The subsequent installments will be paid off after submission and approval of the progress report submitted by the students and their respective supervisors.

After completing their studies, bursars must work in the South African grain and oilseed industry for a period equal to the duration of funding received.

Bursary Eligibility Criteria

To select the bursars, SACTA has specific criteria in place. Everyone applying for the bursary must fulfill all of them. Failing to do so will result in rejection. Therefore, cross-check with the requirements before applying.

The eligibility requirements for the SACTA NPC bursary 2022 are:

  • Must be a South African citizen at the time of applying
  • Must have successfully completed Matriculation
  • Must be pursuing a full-time Masters or Doctoral degree in a field related to the grain and oilseed industry
  • Must be studying at a recognized South African tertiary institution, whether it be a university, college, or Technikon
  • Must be willing to conduct a thesis or dissertation approved by the Trust
  • Must be willing to work in the grain and oilseed industry after the completion of their degrees
  • Must agree to all the policies and procedures of the SACTA Bursary Trust

Fulfilling all the criteria, however, doesn’t guarantee funding. It’s at the sole discretion of the Trust. Shortlisted candidates will be notified and then be asked to attend interviews for the final selection.

How to Apply?

If you fulfill all the criteria, move forward with the application process. It’s an online process that should take no more than an hour to complete. But it’s also important to be diligent throughout the process.

The first step is to complete the SACTA NPC Bursary Application form. It has six sections, and you need to complete four of them. The fifth section is a legal undertaking, which you must agree to, and the sixth section is a checklist. Complete all the fields correctly without any typo error.

Documents Required

The next step is to submit the necessary documents. These are needed to process your application. The documents you need to submit are:

  • ID documents or Passport (should not be more than three months old)
  • Colour ID photo
  • Updated Curriculum Vitae
  • Proof of registration at the tertiary institution and fee statement (must be on institution letterhead)
  • Complete tertiary academic record including the most recent results (must be on institution letterhead)
  • A brief of the proposed research
  • A motivation letter supporting your application and detailing your future goals
